1) Physical Education
Students have been working very hard this week to master the obstacle courses in Mission Impossible. On Thursday and Friday we will be dimming the lights in the gym to add excitement and more of a challenge. Students will be allowed to use a flashlight or headlamp if they would like to. If you choose to bring in a light please ensure that it is clearly labelled with their name.

We are in need of some awesome volunteers to help with cleaning our technology before we put it away for the summer. If you have anytime this Thursday afternoon or Friday morning please let your classroom teacher know so that we can have enough cloths to wipe everything down.

Today we had an amazing trip to the zoo. Ask me about all the animals I saw and the features I noticed in their habitats. We also participated in a program called the "bear necessities." We learned all about the bears that live in Canada and their characteristics. Ask me about the types of bears that live in Alberta. Some of us even got to dress up as a bear.

1) Zoo field trip: We have our final field trip of the year planned for next Tuesday, June 12. We will be travelling by chartered bus to the Calgary Zoo. While at the zoo, students will participate in a program called Bear Necessities. They will also have the opportunity to view the panda exhibit as well as observing other animals that reside at the zoo.
We will be having a picnic lunch at the zoo. Students are required to bring snacks, lunch and a water bottle. They will be carrying these throughout the day in their backpacks.
Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather on that day as this trip proceeds rain or shine. They will need to wear good walking shoes as we will be spending the majority of the day walking through the zoo grounds.
We ask that students arrive at school by 9:00 on Tuesday. We will be entering the school early that day so that we may take attendance and board the bus for a 9:15 departure.
As per CBE regulations:
As this is a school field trip, parents and/or siblings other than those who have officially volunteered are not permitted.
Volunteers and students are also not to buy food or drinks while at the zoo.
Thank you for assisting us in following the CBE regulations for field trips so that we can continue to provide educational opportunities outside of the school building.

Today we had an amazing presentation from Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation. We learned all about owls and even dissected owl pellets! Ask me about what I learned or enjoyed the most.
1) Sports Day: Tomorrow is Sports Day at Royal Oak School. This year our theme is CANADA! Please wear your CANADA gear or Red and White. Students are asked to come prepared for the weather. Bring your hat, sunscreen, water bottle, proper footwear (no flip flops) and a light jacket. We're looking forward to a great afternoon filled with super fun activities and events!

1) Stampede Breakfast: is this Friday at 7:30 am. Pancakes will be served till around 8:30 but families are free to socialize till around 9:00.
2) Shoe boxes needed: As part of our inquiry work students will be building habitats for the animal they are researching. If you could send a shoe box in with your child to assist them in building their animal habitat that would be extremely helpful. We will also accept any extra shoe boxes you may have for students who do not have a shoe box. Thank you for your continued support.

Wow we have sure been busy this week.
Earlier in the week we walked up the William D. Pratt to watch Willy Wonka. The students at Pratt put on an amazing performance. You can ask me about my favourite part!
We have also been hard at work researching our animals in inquiry. Ask me about what we have been learning while researching our animals.
In math we started a new subtraction problem. The grade 1 teachers are having a hard time because animals keep eating vegetables out of their gardens. Ask me to show you how I would draw a vegetable garden with carrots, potatoes, and onions. Then ask me how many vegetables the skunk ate and how I can show my work. You can use the question below and change the numbers.

For Book Week, we had a very special author visit by Lauren Himmelreich today. She shared about what makes a good writer and some of the books and poems she has written. They sure made us laugh!

2) Arbour day trees: In celebration of Arbour Day on Thursday, May 3
rd, Alberta Agriculture and
Forestry will provide tree seedlings for all Grade 1 students throughout the
province. This is a long-standing tradition to teach the value of trees and their
contribution to the Alberta way of life.

Today we had our second Alien in Line skating session which was fantastic. Everyone is doing an amazing job at trying their hardest. Ask me about the new skills we learned today.
1) Hats off for mental health day: is tomorrow. Students are encouraged to wear hats to show their support.
2) Free Stampede Breakfast: form was sent home today. Come and enjoy a free pancake breakfast on Friday May 25th at 7:30 am.

Today we had another great day participating in our Circle of Courage clubs. Ask me about what I did in my club today.
1) Public Art Postcards: Thank you for all of your support! Through the sales of our Grade 1 art work we were able to raise almost $300. to donate to Kidsport. We would like to meet a donation goal of $500. If you would like to purchase another Grade 1 art card, or if you were unable to be at the celebration of learning and would like to purchase a card, please send in your $5.00 donation to your child's teacher and they will send home a beautiful keepsake of their sustainable community art work from Grade 1. These would make perfect Mother's or Father's Day gifts!!
